Critical knowledge of fetal heart rate (FHR) and uterine activity (UA) monitoring are essential for the Labor and Delivery nurse. This comprehensive and dynamic course will review the purpose of and differences between various monitoring techniques. An emphasis will be placed on your understanding of the physiology and pathophysiology related to the FHR to ensure you understand the “why” behind FHR patterns. Standard and approved terminology will be outlined throughout the presentation. Nursing assessment of various patterns will be discussed, with great attention to “how” the nurse should intervene and respond to these FHR and UA patterns. Common antenatal and fetal surveillance tests, including indications and related nursing interventions will be detailed as well. At the end of the course, you will complete a test to solidify your FHM knowledge. Before applying to any L&D position, this type of course will be crucial for you to have under your belt!
